Questions about everyday care or behaviour?
Explore behaviour guidance, companionship and social needs, or all bird-care topics. If a change is sudden or you think your bird may be unwell, use the veterinary guidance below.
Possible illness or injury
Birds can hide illness, and a website cannot assess an individual bird. If you are worried about a sudden or significant change—especially breathing difficulty, collapse, severe weakness, significant bleeding or injury—contact a bird-capable veterinarian promptly rather than waiting for Little Beaks to reply.
Little Beaks is completely closed to intakes, including emergencies. Do not wait for a reply from Little Beaks when a bird needs care.
Find veterinary care
Find an avian veterinarian through AAVAC. This external directory covers participating members in Australia and New Zealand; it is not a complete list or a guarantee of availability.
Call the clinic before travelling. Ask whether they can see your bird, whether urgent care is available and where to go if they cannot help. If you cannot reach a bird-experienced vet in an emergency, contact the nearest open veterinary clinic for advice.
For wildlife, use the wildlife contacts in our found-bird guide. For a lost pet, start the escaped-bird guide.
